Laurie Jones with principal Tim Carter after We Haz Jazz About the director: Laurie
Jones graduated from The University of Mississippi in 1996 with a Bachelor of
Music Education degree. While at Ole
Miss she was a member of the Ole Miss Concert Singers where she was chosen
Concert Singer of the Year in 1995. As
a member of this choir she had the opportunity to compete in two
international competitions first in France, and then in Italy. She then went on to teach general music and
choir in middle school until deciding to stay home with her two youngest
children. After having her 4th
child and staying home for several years, she returned to teaching and later
earned her certification in ESL. In
2006 she was very happy to move to North Mississippi with her family and with
her husband, Matt, who also teaches general music and middle school choir,
be able to teach music again. She
lives in Oxford, MS with her husband, their 4 children and their basset
hound, Coltrane. (Named after the jazz
musician John Coltrane, not Roscoe P.)
She
enjoys singing with her husband as the group Restoration.

About our program: The Potts Camp music program was brought back to the Potts Camp
Schools in August of 2006, after ending several years ago. Music is now taught to students in grades K
through 6. There is also a high school
choir consisting of 9th through 12th graders. Students gain experiences in the many elements of music by hands
on activities and exercises as well as working toward school programs. The goal of the music department at Potts
Camp is to make more well-rounded people with a life-long love of music. Through music, the students at PC learn
about other areas of curricula, such as geography and math. This is hopefully done in a way where the
students don’t even realize that they are learning. It just happens as a byproduct of having
fun in music class. The elementary students learn solfege and basic good singing habits from the first day of school. This prepares them to be great singers and to gain the skill of
singing well. The high school choir is
a growing group of singers who strive for excellence as they prepare varying styles of literature to sing in different
venues. They are also becoming
emerging musicians as they learn about and put to practice all the different
elements of music.
